Buying a suit for the first time can be a daunting task. These helpful hints should set you on the way to becoming a dapper gentleman in a well fitting suit.
Whether you want to go for a tailor made one off or are buying straight from the peg there are a few things you should know about how your suit should fit.
Your shoulders should be hugged by the suit shoulders but not tight enough to appear strained or stretched. There should not be any excessive material that would give it a baggy appearance. By pulling your arms forward you should be able to feel if you are comfortable or whether you need a bigger size.
When buttoning your jacket you should be able to do this without it seeming too loose. You should be able to fit your hand in between the jacket and your chest where it should fit coomfotably without seeming too tight or too loose.
You should be able to hang your arms loosely and cup the hem of the the suit jacket comfortably. You will feel if the jacket is too long or too short and go from there.
Your sleeves should reach the base of your thumbs when you hang you arms loosely at your sides. This should allow for between one and two centimeters of your shirt to show.
You will know what kind of fit around your waist is comfortable for you and your body type and the length should reach the top of your shoe, never touching the floor at the back.
Of course you will be able to feel how comfortable the suit is and any good tailor will be able to advise you on how the style looks and suits you.
